Dai Mi : Government Responses to Trade Liberalization: Evidence fro​m China

Description：How do governments redistribute the gains and losses from trade? We investigate the reactions of the Chinese government to import tariff cuts resulting from the country’s WTO accession. We find strong evidence that local governments achieved redistribution through domestic tax policies on firms, but there is little evidence of redistribution through social welfare programs or public goods provision.
